North Tawton based timber building specialists John Shields Woodwork, Devon offer a range of options, when designing and choosing your timber building. These include:

Building layout and configuration

Window and door options are flexible. The position of doors and the number of windows is down to you. For sheds the doors will usually be opening outwards. They may be single or double, as follows:

Shed doors
Single door. 750mm or 900mm wide.
Double doors 1500mm or 1800mm wide.

Shed windows. Pane size 600mm wide x 730mm high. Opening or fixed.

Office/studio external doors. Solid or glazed, single or double.

Internal doors. Ply lined or pine 4 panel doors.

Windows. Standard casement windows/ cottage or Georgian style. 600mm / 1200mm/ 1700mm wide, 1050mm or 1200mm high

Internal walls. Available as required.  We offer 12mm MDF board, tongue and groove effect MDF board or tongue and groove pine.

Exterior wall membranes. A breathable waterproof wall membrane is included in garages, sheds, workshops, studios and offices. Stables and Livestock buildings are not lined with a waterproof membrane.

Roof Options

Our standard roofing material is plastisol steel sheeting in a choice of colours.  The sheets are available in box profile (standard) or traditional 75mm corrugated profile (optional extra). We also offer composite plastisol roof panels. Insulated with a white steel internal lining, these are ideal for workshops and garages.

Larger buildings will have plastisol steel roofing in a choice of colours.

As an alternative we offer fibre cement sheeting in a 75mm corrugated profile. This is supplied in a natural cement colour.

Roof Lights:  Translucent G.R.P. roof lights are available in box and corrugated profile. They are lined on the underside with a clear sheet of 4mm perspex.  This helps to reduce condensation, which is often a problem associated with translucent sheets.  Standard size is 1m wide x 1m long.  Price £75 plus VAT.

Velux Windows: These can be installed in corrugated plastisol roofs.  They are double glazed and opening. 

Slate Roof - For the ultimate finish on your building we can provide a slate roof using fibre cement slates. Alternatively ask us to provide the timber roof construction and arrange for slating by others.

Please be aware that the weight of the slate roof will require the building to be strengthened. This will affect the price.

Cedar Shingles - Our Dartmoor range of studios have cedar shingles as standard, but they may be included on other buildings. With a 40 year life and a natural look they are the ultimate product for the roofs of garden buildings.

Felt Shingles - For a softer look on the roof of your building we can provide felt shingles. These are available in green, red and slate grey and give the affect of a tiled roof.

The shingles are laid onto 18mm pressure treated plywood giving a durable and waterproof finish.
